Unauthorised Encampment Prevention - Fairborne Way, Stoughton

We the undersigned petition Guildford Borough Council to Put in place a suitable structure or obstacles to prevent unauthorised encampment of travellers on Kirke Fields, Fairborne Way. This could be decorative railing to be in keeping with the existing railing used at the entrance of the Cardwells Keep estate. Or, please consider any suitable alternative.

On 3rd June 2021, a group of travellers started an unauthorised encampment on Kirkefields Green on Fairborne Way. This green is a central part of the local community, used at the weekends by a Junior Football team for practice and matches, (its available to hire as a football pitch and for sports and recreation users, advertised as parking for 20 cars, with changing room and showers and toilets on the Guildford Borough Council website). The site is used by local families and their children, dog walkers and community activities such as Beavers and Cubs. If travellers are regularly using this space, our local community cannot use it for its given purpose. From a Health and Safety point of view, we must consider the amount of litter and human waste that is left on these sites as a result of these encampments is a danger to public health, in particular the young children that live in this estate and surrounding areas. During this current situation the noise from the group of travellers is particularly loud until very late at night (beyond midnight) and this is unfair to the houses immediately next to the field. When this housing estate was originally built it was considered as a conservation area so to allow groups to ruin this particular green space that has been carefully planned for the community, is totally unacceptable. We need to protect this space and others in the surrounding area including Queen Elizabeth Park. This will happen again so must do something to stop it.
