Agreement for GovWifi use (cross-government wifi access)

Decision Maker: Lead Specialist for ICT

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: No

Decision:

GovWifi is a cross-government service that provides wifi access in public sector buildings and is managed centrally by the Cabinet Office (https://www.wifi.service.gov.uk/).

The Council intends to use GovWifi to meet a requirement to extend its guest wifi provision.

Reasons for the decision:

GovWifi offers a free authenticated user wifi access service, that is provided by the Cabinet Office for use in public sector buildings. This appears to meet our requirements at no cost, using a centrally provided service.

Alternative options considered:

Alternative options considered either had a direct cost associated, or required further implementation effort. These were rejected as zero cost solution provided centrally was considered lower risk, and better value for money.
